Description: Worked as a part of the Rapid Methods group, which develop the quality control/validation methods for worldwide implementation at Nestlé factories. Was responsible for the development of hydrolysed gluten detection mechanisms using ELISA and LC/MS-MS. Project involved characterization and analysis of enzymatic/thermal treatment on gluten proteins.
Skills gained: worked on different tasks concurrently; ability to work in international, high-pressure environment; initiative by being up-to-date with scientific literature and its implementation into practice; communication skills through organization of meetings with suppliers/other biotechnology companies. Proteomics experience: size-exclusion chromatography, mass spectrometry (MS), MS data analysis using PEAKS7 and MASCOT software.

A dual-disciplinary course which combined scientific research and business processes in biotech. Course was focused on translation of scientific ideas and concepts into a business plan for start-up technologies or innovative processes within biotechnology industries.

Scientific part of the course included the following modules:
• Antibody Biotechnology - structure/functionality of antibodies, immunoassays, antibody/antigen complexes, solution properties of antibodies, therapeutic applications. Deep understanding of methodologies and analysis of antibodies in food, pharmaceutical, healthcare and biomedical industries.
• Industrial and Biomedical Macromolecules - theoretical and practical understanding properties of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates useful in industries such as gelation, viscosity and stability.
• Polysaccharide and Drug Delivery Biotechnology - potential applications of monosaccharides; marine polysaccharides; bacterial and synthetic polysaccharides and others.
• Physical Chemistry for Applied Biopharmaceutical Biotechnology - practical aspects of thermodynamics, macromolecular non-ideality; macromolecular heterogeneity and molecular weight averages; macromolecular flexibility; analytical ultracentrifugation.
• Bioinformatics.

Business school part of the course was aimed for mastering administration and management of the biotech/biopharma businesses. The modules included:

• Finance and Accounting
• Innovation Management
• Technology Entrepreneurship.

Bachelors degree individual laboratory research project: Generation and characterization of fluorescent protein tagged isoforms of P-glycoprotein. Project aimed to contribute to understanding the structure of P-glycoprotein, a protein responsible for development of multi-drug resistance in cancer, important to biopharmaceutical industry.
Main achievements:
• Generated of fluorescently labelled constructs of P-glycoprotein using Cerulean Blue fluorescent protein and Venus yellow fluorescent protein
• Established stable mammalian cell lines (HEK293) expressing generated constructs
• Examined localization of the fusion protein construct using confocal microscopy techniques
• Examined functionality of fusion protein constructs using fluorescence intensity assays
